The proper way to run wiring on the exterior wall of a house.
Run recepticle from attic to outside wall.
If you will need to fish wiring through a wall drill a hole through the wood plate in the attic only.
There are two ways to run electrical wiring on the exterior walls of a house or other structure.
And use semi rigid wiring fish tape to pull your wiring down to your outlet location.
It will be next to impossible to drill downward under the portion of the roof that slopes to the attic floor without a right angle drill.
One method is to run individual wires.
To make this project easier you ll be using an indoor outlet that s opposite where you want the outdoor outlet to be.
Running wires from the attic to the basement.
Locate an interior outlet that is on that exterior wall.
Find the correct breaker and turn it off.
Ideally your house included a future tube which is a pvc pipe running from the basement to the attic specifically for this purpose.
Now go up to your attic or down to the basement or crawlspace and drill a hole in the top or bottom wall plate in the same wall cavity as the outlet.
When working from an attic space it will be significantly easier to access a wall space on the floor below by working either an interior wall or the exterior wall that is on the gable end of the structure.
Homes must have at least one outdoor receptacle at the front and rear of the house.
Now that you have run wires from your outlet to the basement or the attic you may need to run the wire from the attic to the basement.
Running wires inside rigid conduit.
Use a voltage tester to ensure the indoor outlet is running properly.
Attached decks and balconies with interior access including a door to the indoors must have a receptacle no more than 6 1 2 feet above the deck.
Make sure the indoor outlet can handle the new exterior gfci outlet without overloading.
Attach the wire or cable to a fish tape or coat hanger using electrical tape and feed it into the hole until it reaches the opening at the other end.
When extending a circuit for example the electrician may run the cable vertically from an existing outlet box up to the attic or down into the basement across joists to a spot directly above or below the new box location then into that wall cavity to the new electrical box opening.
Once you ve determined the electrical outlet to use as a power source and shut it off use an electronic stud finder to locate the studs on both sides.
Turn off the power at the main panel.
Shut off the electrical outlet.
When cutting through drywall from the interior of a room use a utility knife and cut carefully you don t want to drill through a hidden wire or the paper.
