Seal the open holes with silicone before installing the awning bracket.
I tightened it a few times but it continued to work it s way to the point where the bolts eventually pulled through and it came completely off.

It goes through the aluminum sidewall and into the frame of the coach.
The plate goes on the outside of the side of the unit and ends up under the bottom bracket of the awning leg this is not yet on your awning it is a repair part we use to re attatch the awning bracket you silicone and screw it to the outside then drill the two screw holes into it then screw the bracket on to it.
Finally got back out and pulled everything apart found the backers about 1 4 below where they drilled the holes.

The lags were screwed into 1 2 wallboard.
Mine screw through the bracket that hold the awning arm.
If your internal framing consists of aluminum or steel studs instead of wood supports you may have success simply going to a larger 5 16 lag screw as you ve suggested.
